A good rule of thumb is to open the game <0>every 7 days</0>. Depending on your platform, step source (wearable vs phone) and other factors beyond our control, steps can be loaded from 10-30 days in the past, but these can vary. Opening the game once every week should prevent you from losing any steps, though.
